An Ewe family mourns the death of their sister, (far left) a Christian cloth seller, who apparently died from an asthma attack. The family, who practice African traditional religion, consulted a diviner who revealed the true cause of death was from insulting a god. The Ewe believe in cause and effect in the spirit world. If something bad happens or someone falls ill, the Ewe blame it on an upset god. If misfortunes continue, the family will consult the god to see if they need to bring a girl to the shrine to serve as a fiashidi, a wife of the god.
